Lida District Research Group
The Lida District Research Group (DRG) of LitvakSIG obtains records from all shtetls (towns) in the Lida Uyezd (district) of Vilnius Gubernia (region) of Lithuania. This includes the town of Lida itself as well as records that pertain to the entire Uyezd.
Our original focus was on obtaining 19th century Russian Empire period records from the the Lithuanian State Historical Archives in Vilnius (LVIA) for Lida since Lida is in present day Belarus and between the wars was in Poland. In recent years we have obtained records for the 20th century.
The group has translated all known available vital records for shtetlach in the district.
We access records, translate, create a database of them and distribute the data to our contributors. We distribute the data to our contributors in Excel format through the Lida District website at http://donors.litvaksig.org/site/lida. As part of LitvakSIG¹s overall mission, our group data is made publicly available in the LitvakSIG All Lithuania Database (ALD) well after contributors get early access but only via the web interface and not in Excel format.
Since the Lida DRG was established, we have translated and distributed data from records for Lida Uyezd and the 12 shtetls in Lida Uyezd. - for more than 100,000 individual record lines of people! Our projects are ongoing and progress is based on our available funds and the availability of records.
Our contributors are people who are researching ancestors from any shtetl in Lida Uyezd who have joined together to make the most of our shared resources. Since many of our ancestors lived in one place but worked, were officially registered, owned property or assets, or had relatives in another place nearby, it is only by researching on the broader geographic scale of the uyezd that one can be sure where a family was really "from" and that one has searched thoroughly.
Shtetls in Lida Uyezd are:
Belitsa, Eisiskes, Lida, Novy Dvor, Orlya, Ostryna, Radun, Rozhanka, Shchuchyn, Vasilishki, Voranava, Zheludok
Surname Lists
We have compiled surname lists for most of the translations done by the Lida DRG. Click on these files to see if your surname was in a particular town’s records, and note the variations on how your family surnames were spelled.
