Visiting the Jewish Cemetery of Zemaiciu Naumestis

Zemaiciu Naumestis, called Novoe Mjesto on old Russian maps, was a town on the Russian-German frontier. In the nineteenth century in this town there were thirty shops, two water mills, one windmill, three tanneries, and a little hospital. In 1860 there were 165 houses in the town, with a total of 1,600 inhabitants, while in 1897 there were 2, 445 inhabitants.

The Jewish cemetery in Zemaiciu Naumestis (Neistat) is quite difficult to find. Even many of the local inhabitants do not know about the existence of this older Jewish cemetery or its location. When I went to try to photograph it in June 2000, they sent me instead to the mass grave from Holocaust times which is located two kilometers from the town on the road to Vainutas -- and in the opposite direction from the old cemetery.

The visible dates on the graves at this older cemetery range from 1846 up until 1938. Unfortunately, the dates on many of these graves has either been erased and worn away by time and weather, or they have sunk and become submerged beneath the earth. As is the usual custom, the names are inscribed on the stones in the traditional Hebrew style as the son or daughter of and, thus, there are very, very few gravestones ~ only 19 out of 200 matzevot ~ in this Jewish cemetery in Zemaiciu Naumestis with last names.
